Painting, Canada Day, Recipe Round-Up

You know you've waited too long between trips to Canada when you paint your living room the same colour as Habitant split pea soup.

My family may never again let me roam free in the paint aisle at Loews. Child #1 and Child #2 described said paint colour (Grecian Olive on the can) with detailed descriptive potty language. Which doesn't bear repeating for the cultured readers of this blog.

However.....I LOVE IT!! I REALLY REALLY LOVE IT!

Things I have learned while painting:

1. Child #4 is a very good painter and will actually paint to the Beatles, if her Hannah Montana CD goes missing.

2. I can sing all the words to Penny Lane which I haven't listened to in a million years, but can't remember a few items the sec my feet cross the threshold to the grocery store.

3. I can paint equally poorly with both my right and left hand.

4. I paint the way I write--slowly and with lots of revisions.

5. DH (Darling Husband) is not open to gentle constructive criticism about his painting.

6. Children will not accept painting as an equivalent and alternate activity to surfing or going to the movies. Even when sternly reminded they will be watching TV in the freshly painted living room and showering in freshly painted bathroom. And that they are an integral part of the family and must contribute. And blah, blah, blah...

7. Other bloggers are currently painting, including Welcome to the Patti-O and More Than Just a Mom. Which means I'm in good company.

Canada Day! And if you live in California, it's the first day of our two-hands-free law. So, no chatting on the cell while driving, unless you've got blue tooth.

Now, about our Recipe Round-Up on Wednesday, July 2...

If you want to join the party, just post a recipe for a side dish or a salad or a dessert. On your blog. On Wednesday. Link back to me. Leave a comment on my blog letting me know your post is up, and I'll link to you. Oh, you can always let me know what your recipe is and I'll put that next to your link.

Then, we'll all visit each other's blogs and get loads of yummy ideas for July 4 or whenever and get loads of blog hits. And just, in general, be happy, sharing, well-fed bloggers.

I'm off for a cup of tea in my beautiful pea-soup living room.

Bon appetit!

p.s. I'll post photos when the rooms are put back together.

  3. You are so funny!

I love painting. My daughters love painting. My husband? HATES it, and man does it show. When I was doing the bedroom he wanted to help and after about five minutes, and me having a heart attack, I asked him kindly to put the brush down, step away, and go watch TV.

    Can't wait to see pictures!

  5. Happy Canada Day!

Ah, painting. I've had to do a fair amount of that over the past couple of days. We've been painting our set, trying get everything ready for our performance at the end of July.

Recipes you say? I'll have to find my mom's recipe for her No-Bake cookies. They're the bomb. Or her Amish Friendship bread...anyway I'll see what I can scrape up.

  6. I love Canadian beer and the country and people, but split pea soup is not my favorite.

  7. Split pea soup - it's good when it's cold out and you're hungry.

Go back to the original name ... and everybody will love it.

Happy Canada Day from mosquito land.

  8. Painting is a woman's job. This woman's job! My family has learned to stay out of my way when I have paint can and paint brush in hand. I am a dangerous creature.

As to the color, I'm so glad you like yours. Mine...not so much. Beloved got to choose and frankly I can't decide if it reminds me of a dr. office or mint ice cream.

I wanted a rich, carmamel...he said it looked like brown mustard...so now we have ice cream.

    grumble, grumble, grumble

  9. Barrie, remind the Child #1 - 4, that pea soup is a neutral color and much more refreshing than pepto bismal pink! :o)

  10. Barrie, I remember eating habitant pea soup when the DH and I went to Quebec in 1994. It was yellower than I was used to, but very tasty. I'm not sure I'd want that color on my walls, but as long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters. :)

  11. Not so keen on eating peas soup but I LOVE the colour. I love green. Period.

In our house Hubby, T, is the DIY genius. My painting prowess is a bit streaky but I try, I try. We've been in our house since Feb and we haven't changed anything yet, but I'm itching to change the wallpaper in our bedroom. The blue feels cold - I want green.

So many posts to catch up on - you've been busy! I'll be posting a dessert recipe tomorrow - something easy, with lots of cream and sugar!

    I might even make it!!!

  15. Oh Barrie---Larramie mentioned Pepto Bismol pink. We lived in a house where the kitchen WAS that color. Pea soup wins every time!

  16. Hi! Painting. Oh, the joy of painting. My bathroom - which I painted a few years ago - looks like an underwater oasis. The base color is dark blue and over that is a sea foam green that was rag rolled on and looks like bubbles. My toilet seat is blue (clear) with fishies on it and I have all the accessories to match it.

Next week we're painting Middle's room and laying wood (faux) floors. I'm not looking forward to it. Do you ever visit Iowa? You could come paint for me. ;)

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think I have a recipe I can scrounge up for your recipe fun. I'll post back if I get it up.

  18. oh, yum! makes really stinko gas! ;) lol

  19. Linda, you are so observant! Habitant French Canadian Pea Soup (which MAY be the official name on the soup can) is made from yellow split peas. Canned pea soup made from yellow split peas is not easy to find. :)

  20. The builder who built our house painted our walls GRAY - a light gray, but gray nonetheless. I really hate it, and someday we're going to paint the whole house. But we thought we'd wait a few years since it was brand new paint. We were going to do it while I was pregnant, but my doctor said NO. Now who knows how long it'll be before my husband feels motivated again?

  21. When I was visiting my folks on Canada Day weekend... You'll never guess what my Dad made for lunch... Habitant pea soup.
