Child #4 makes a list

Important background info: Child #4 is NINE YEARS OLD.

I'm a huge list maker. Apparently this habit is rubbing off on Child #4. I found this list on the kitchen counter. It was next to her math homework and her Classic Color markers.

Here's what it says:

To Do List:
1. Sign book
2. piano practice
3. make (I erased the boy's name to protect the innocent) fall in love with me
4. do nails
5. find preasant for Jacklyn

At the bottom of the list, there is a heart that's inscribed "i love you mom" and then our initials below.

make X fall in love with me

There is so much wrong and worrisome with that sentence. My heart is already aching for her. This talented, gorgeous, generous girl should never have to work at getting someone to fall in love with her. Any guy who doesn't see her for the gem she is isn't worth the trouble. Obviously. Oh, I just want to wrap her up in a big thick cocoon, safe from heartbreak and disappointment in love. And she's only nine... Sigh.

Time for a mother-daughter chat. Mind you, she may have already forgotten about the list. I'm pretty sure the "practice piano" never happened!

And in exciting news....

i so don't do spooky was the #1 bestseller last week at my local Barnes & Noble.!!!
AND i so don't do mysteries was #2!!! THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR THE SUPPORT!

  2. Congratulations on the B&N sales! As for your daughter, it's a game like dress up at that age.

Quite amazing holiday lights in the post below.

  3. Yes, #3 is a heartbreaker. But I think at such an age, we actually believe we can make that sort of thing happen.
Bless her – and her wonderful list.

Congratulations on being # 1 and #2 on that best seller list!

  4. Oh my.

I sigh with you. Where did we get this idea as girls that we can (or should) MAKE the guys like us? I never had any luck with that and the girls I know that did usually didn't get the kind of "like" they wanted.

Love is so much better when it's freely offered...

  11. My heart aches too, with memories of trying to do the same thing. I guess it's something we all have to learn.

  12. You're a bestseller superstar!
As for the letter ... Maybe he already is in love with her. Boys keep secrets too.

  13. You know, if I recall my childhood accurately, there's a very good chance that not only did she forget about the list, but she might have basically forgotten the boy too. Maybe not actually forgotten, but kids go through crushes pretty quickly. But still, a mother/daughter talk is always good. It's really never too early to start talking about that stuff.

    On another note:
CONGRATS! It's good to hear that you're doing so well!

  14. Congrats on the sales!

Ah yes, poor child #4, discovering how unmanageable boys are at an early age.

  15. Woohoo to you on your book sales! It's like I know somebody famous now!

Regarding your daughter, I was like her at her age. I also remember being pretty resilient about rejection. Not that this is useful advice or anything...

  16. When I was nine I was already in love with the one boy in my class that seemed possible. Not that I am recommending my own behavior. Nine was followed up by seven boy-crazy years before I straightened out.
    Congrats on the books.
    P.S. I won't have a book in January.

  18. Congrats on the #1 :D

The 9-year-old girls I know think boys are a waste of time... pretty sure that's what I thought at that age, too. I hope she has forgotten about her list!
