In sad chameleon news...

Today's post is a downer. Sorry, but that's the way life goes sometimes. Blogging is not all fun and games.

I'm sad to report that our feisty female veiled chameleon died. Yes, that same female who hogged the crickets and hissed at the male when he tried to eat.

We don't know what happened. She stopped eating and drinking. Then, this weekend, she stopped breathing.

In response, the male has been munching up a storm, totally hanging out on the rim of the tupperware container where we dump the crickets. This morning, he even scarfed down two wax worms (a first for him).

I prefer to believe this cricket-and-wax-worm orgy is his form of a chameleon wake. Not that he was pleased to see her go. Or, worse yet, that he somehow plotted her demise. No, no, no.

The female's passing was commemorated by a short ceremony at the bottom of our garden. Child #4 officiated and spoke kindly of the female chameleon, noting her ability to look in different directions at the same time and change to various shades of green.

May she rest in peace.

Will the male want/need a female companion now? I know nothing about these creatures! Or will he be happy to eat and eat and eat????

Hope your kids are OK...loosing a pet - of any type - is hard.

My sympathies.

Wow. I'm awful at goodbyes. I cried when each and everyone one of our fish died. And they die so unexplainably that I swore - no more fish!
I'm sorry she's gone. I hope you're all okay now that there's been closure at the bottom of the garden. My sympathies to Mr. Veiled Chameleon, too, for when reality hits. ;-)

I'm sorry. It's not fun losing a pet.

As much as I enjoyed teasing you about your chameleons, I do feel bad. Especially for the kids.

And even in death... she is doing her camouflage thing... I can't even see the grave.

Oh No! That is so sad! I am sorry to hear! Now it will be even longer before #2 will be able to have little baby chameleons. Or will there be another female arriving. Hope all is well. XO

Sorry for your loss...but I wonder if Mr. Chameleons will recover...ahem...the "loss" of his "better" half...

Sad, but funny!

Sad news. It’s tough to lose a pet.

I know nothing about chameleons, but the circumstances do sound a little bit suspicious. On the other hand, how old was she?

My sympathies.
Your post (and your loss) remind me of the numerous backyard burials we've had here. I always had to hold back a smile at the farewell words spoken by the kids during these sombre ceremonies.

So sorry about the veiled lady, but it sounds like she had a lovely eulogy.

Wow. I hope someone will speak kindly at my funeral. I would LOVE if they could say I had the ability to look in different directions at the same time. But alas, I cannot. *sigh*

So sorry about your loss. When #2 daughter lost her Beta, I officiated:
"Rainbow was a good fish. He was loved and he will be missed."

Oh sorry news. I would have a wax worm in sympathy, but there are limits to what I'm willing to do.

aw, sound like a very talented pet you had there. :( RIP!

Sorry for your loss.

Sounds like she had quite the personality. A bit like the 94-year-old feisty great-aunt that you think will live forever simply because she could beat up Ah-nold with her cane.

That probably sounded wrong. I am sorry. Petloss is always hard.

:( oh your poor kids. i still cry over my cat that passed away over a year ago. i love the eulogy though, rare gift to look in different directions at the same time...the innocence of children's thoughts is so sweet.

In African folklore, chameleons are definitely bad news precisely because they can look in two directions at once.
