First off, BIG 2k8 news. It's Marissa Doyle's launch week. She's written a terrific historical YA, Bewitching Season. I'm reading it right now. Marissa's one of those people who writes well, knows a ton, is super fascinating, and you just know you'll click with in real life. I've really enjoyed getting to know her online. Anyway, here's a link to the Class of 2k8 blog where Marissa's posting all week long.

Second, I've been tagged by JaneyV at Whittering On. First meme, and quite possibly the last, I've ever done. I couldn't say no to Janey because she's so delightful and I love her blog. She tells it like it is. Plus, she's got a wicked sense of humor. I think I was also tagged for this meme ages ago by my good friend Maureen McGowan who is an excellent writer and does fab film reviews too. And lives two blocks from one of my sisters. Which is very weird considering Maureen and I met online and don't even live in the same country.

Anyway, here goes. Six random things about myself. (At least, they're not asking for six INTERESTING random things. I'd be up all night, racking my brains!)

1. If allowed, I will eat licorice until sick.
2. I don't like tea bags with strings.
3. I will never ever go whale watching on a boat again.
4. I'm not the least bit athletic, but my children are. Very.
5. I'm negligent about opening mail. This is not good for bill paying. Just ask San Diego Gas & Electric.
5. I'm going to Canada this summer for a long time. But it won't be long enough.

Okey dokey. That was less painful than I was expecting. Now for the fun part.

Rubbing hands gleefully, I tag:

the mystery starts here
doggybloggy
Deborah Dale
just another day
Nancy Viau

And, last, but certainly not least, I tag Brian-Ohio, who said mean mean things on his blog about my chameleons. (I really do forgive you, Brian.)

Here are the meme rules:

a. Link to the person who tagged you.
b. Post the rules on your blog.
c. Write six random things about yourself.
d. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
e. Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment at their blog.
f. Let your tagger know when your entry is up.

I know how busy life can get, so meme if you have time, peeps. Except Brian because this is his penance. :)

In other news, today marks the release of two books I'll definitely pick up: Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr and One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost.

  1. Where in Canada, and why won't it be long enough?

  2. Mostly Toronto (and won't you be back in Richmond Hill?). And we rented a cottage for a while around the Kingston area. It's never long enough because I'm from T.O. and I love it to death and my sisters and my nieces and nephews and other extended family members live there. Last time, my kids dragged me sobbing (me, not them) through Customs and Immigration at Pearson. Fairly pathetic parenting, right?

  3. Barrie! You're a great sport to take part. I know how long this took me so thank you so much for sharing!

I ate a whole bag (practically) of Liquorice Allsorts yesterday (and that's not even the nice stuff) and I did feel thoroughly ickky. I'm with you on the tea bag front (proper English tea!). Was the whale-watching a barfy experience? I think once you've popped a kid or two (or 3 or 4) out, unless you're a demon for "squeeze, think of an elevator travelling to the 10th floor, hold...and relax" anything to do with jumping around becomes a dangerous experience!!! Your first 5th one made me hoot because me ignoring the mail drives my Hubby crazy. I only open the interesting-looking ones! Re. the 2nd #5 (I dig your contempt for regular, consecutive numbering!) have a lovely time visiting Toronto. I had a holiday there once, visiting a family member who has since moved, which was really nice. For my next trip (though God knows when that'll be) we're going to go to BC and the Rockies.
Oooh and thank you for all the nice things you said about my blog :D x

  4. That's it. That's the best you got. You don't like strings on your tea bags. Come on! Why didn't you put down...

    1. I breathe air
    2. I eat food
    3. I use my lungs to breathe the air
    4. I use my teeth to chew the food.

Hey... I just wrote four of my own. Just two more and I've completed my penance. Hooray!

  5. I've never been very good at tag. I do try. But I'm not very good at it. See for yourself.

  6. We share #1 and #5.

You coming to Ottawa area at all? Kingston is not too far...

    Toodles!

  7. Red or black licorice? I've made myself sick eating red licorice.
Wonderful news as to your trip to Canada. A homecoming...

  8. My first tag! Is it okay to be excited??

I told my daughter, 12-year-old, about your book, "I so don't do mysteries" and she said it sounded very good! I told her I buy it for her, or maybe I'll win it when you have a contest to give a signed copy away, which I'm sure you will do, right???? LOL

  9. Ok, I'm breaking the rules and putting my random 5 here because Guess What? I just did this on my blog last month...ahhahahahh.

    1. I can only sit still when I write.
    2. I don't like old movies, and am not fond of historical fiction either. (Eeep--shhhh--some class members are gonna shoot me, Bar.)
    3. I have a close relative who's best friends with Johnny Depp. (Maybe we'll meet at close relative's wedding someday? One. Can. Hope.)
    4. I'm a wannabe Buddhist locked in a Presbyterian mindset.
    5. Given the choice between staying home and writing, and going on carefree, adventurous, wilderness trips, I'd go on the trips. (But I'd probably take my laptop because, well, I'm a writing-addict.)

  10. Hum, now I'd like to know why you won't go on a whale watching boat again.

  11. Janey: I love licorice all sorts. As did my dad. So, they really take me back to my childhood!

Brian: you are obviously not a tea drinker. BTW, my chameleons are doing fine today. In case, you were wondering... :)

Laura: I'm not sure I'll make it to Ottawa on this trip. But I will wave to you, a buttertart in one hand and a Nanaimo bar in the other. (These cottages are apparently near an excellent bakery.)

Beth: I'm an equal opportunity licorice eater. So, red or black works for me. But no weirdo flavors like green or chocolate.

Bina: Sure, be excited about meme. Life is short, after all. About the signed copy contest. Sounds good to me. Although surreal. Because the book isn't even printed yet. Just last week, I got an email from Random House about a detail on page 177.

Nancy: oops. Thanks for playing along anyway. And if I were holding the Johnny Depp card, I'd do as many memes as possible!

Deborah: you did fine!! Thank you for joining in. :)

Charles: Major Motion Sickness. I will spare you any additional details.

  12. I'm not athletic either! I always tell my boys that they got all their athletic ability from me...that's why I don't have any left!! ;)

  13. Barrie, you and I really do have some strange cosmic connection.

While I don't share your teabag string aversion... (Although, you can taste it, can't you.) I don't like to drink coffee from paper cups.

And I am a total negligent mail opener, too. Toronto Hydro and San Diego Gas & Electric probably share notes on us.

Can't wait to see you this summer!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Does summer in Canada refer to a non-working vacation? Hope so, Barrie!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love these things - gives us readers even more dirt on our fave bloggers!

And - I totally agree about tea bags. Strings are a pain!

  16. It's fun to learn idiosyncrasies about people.

  17. Hey Barrie,
Meet your sister in "licorice love". I'm unable to live with Good and Plenty or redvines Black licorice. Weirdly, I didn't like licorice until around 15 yrs. ago. The two things above are the only two things I can't have around.

Hope you are well and thank you for your kind comment.

  18. You could pull out the strings or cut them off.
    No strings attached
Maybe that is actually something that means something much deeper. What do you think?

  19. Hey Barrie, Thanks for visiting my blog!

I'm a licorice fan myself, especially with ice water. But I hate Red Vines. Only Twizzlers.

Fun Facts! They are straight & to the point. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, YES! I eat the Panda Bear black licorices with the real licorice in them. It's hard to find licorice with real licorice in it!

I can eat a whole box, no problem, in an hour.

  21. I just did one of these a couple weeks ago and failed miserably in the disclosing department

    ReplyDelete
  22. Then, doggybloggy, you should not be subjected to one again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. wait - black licorice or the red strawberry one? Can't stand the black stuff but the red stuff I can eat until it turns my boogers red. Yeah that was gross huh? ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  24. licorice? bleah. Well- except for Twizzlers. I like that- but my dad says that doesn't count as real licorice.

  26. One bite of licorice and I'm six but I can relate to #5.

  27. I’ll never go dolphin watching on a boat again: very long time on boat, very short time with dolphins. It ruined what was otherwise only a mildly disappointing holiday!
