Thursday's Agenda + Random Odds and Ends

Child #4 (7 years old) had me sign this before she went to bed last night. So, we all know what subject I'll be tackling after school today. Is there really a Santa Claus? Yikes. It was tricky, but I managed to skate through Christmas without having THE talk. I'm guessing that pesky, hopped-up-on-sugar Easter Bunny has stirred this particular pot again. Drat. I'm not ready to let go of my last Santa believer. Motherhood is so not for sissies.

Other random things (and I mean ra-ra-ra random) I'd like to clear up in this post:

1. For our anniversary DH and I went out for Cajun salmon. BUT on the weekend, we're going for sushi. And that means everybody's happy. Thank you for all the well wishes.

2. Last time I went to The Whaley House, I was the one and only person there. But, I did NOT see a ghost. Probably they were all out shopping. There's some very fun shopping in Old Town.

3. I do not homeschool. I'm not smart enough.

4. Katie Couric (the fake one) will be back to pull off a brilliant interview with Liz Gallagher, author of The Opposite Of Invisible. And....I have an ARC to give away. (Or keep for myself) When? I have to check with Liz.

5. Our dog, a toy poodle, eats baby food for his dinner. Turkey + rice.

Happy Thursday, everyone!!

  2. Happy delayed Anniversary.

What are you saying about Santa? No one ever gave me any talk.

  3. Happy Anniversary!

Baby food? Really? I never thought of that. I bet that's much healthier for him. Is it?

    Bummer about the ghost, LOL!

  4. Eileen--are there perhaps other Talks you missed out on? I could phone you.... :)

  5. Spyscribbler, I have no idea whether the baby food is healthier or not. The vet suggested it once when she (the dog, that is) was on antibiotics. The rice helped with the stomach side effects of the meds. The dog loved the baby food so much, that we just kept on buying it.

  7. Oh dear! Sorry you are having the Santa talk...Maybe you should leave it to the older siblings to ruin that. That what my parents did! LOL! I can't believe that the dog is still eating that from the last time I was out there. See you soon. XO!

  8. First of all, is that a 7 yr old writing? I am envious...my boy writes and spells horribly.
Second, I'm glad you are having sushi this weekend. Because I wish I were...
Third, with you on the homeschooling. It's tempting, but I know it's beyond my capabilities.

Have a lovely day - Heidi

  9. The letter is so cute. And funny. But, it's obvious your 7 year old is serious about this.

In my experience, 7 is pretty early for this talk. For my first three, it happened at about 9. My 4 year old is still a believer and I love it.

    Be gentle. And don't cry.

    Oh... Happy Anniversary!!!

  10. Oh no. THE talk. And I LOVE LOVE how she wrote a "contract" (as my little one calls them) and even made you sign it! TOO cute!

A Toy Poodle? I had one for 11 years. White. 4 pounds. My Diamond Dog. She died of congestive heart failure, but I think the vet could have done something about it that night I took her in. He lied to me. Gave her a shot, gave me medicine to give her, and she died three hours later. I still cry. That was in May of 225.

  11. holy smokes i laughed at the baby food eatin' pooch. is that wrong?!

and when boy was two he asked about santa and i spilled the beans...husband has never ever let me forget it.

  12. I told my kids that once they stop believing in Santa he stops coming (that goes for the tooth fairy & the Easter Bunny too). My oldest is 10 & I know he keeps the illusion alive because he knows I'm the one who needs it!

  13. If there isn't a Santa, then I didn't get a laptop for Christmas.

If I didn't get a laptop, I'm not typing this message.

If I'm not typing it, you can't read it.

Thusly, if you can read this -- THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS.

  14. Santa LIVES! Now, not as certain about the Easter Bunny... ;)

  15. My eight-year-old still believes in Father Christmas. Yesterday at lunch, she gave this reason, "I know he must be real because my mummy and daddy would never lie to me." Ouch. Do I disabuse her? Or leave her I leave her in cloud cuckoo land, waiting for a large bunny to disburse chocolate eggs in our garden?

Thanks for finding your way to my blog, by the way. I am happy to have found yours and love the idea of your new novel.

  16. Katie Couric (the fake one)

LOL!! I wonder if she knows she's fake?

Happy Anniversary!! You guys look soooo cute coming down the aisle!

Re: The Talk: be sure to have a copy of the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" editorial on hand to let D #4 know this is an age-old question and to help keep things in perspective.

ARC!!! I still have more room on my special ARC bookshelf (hint, hint). :-)

  17. I tagged you with the 'six thing meme'. So if you add one more little random thing, you're gold! ;)

    I don't home school either--it's a sanity issue.

    Good luck with the discussion!

  18. I feel for you over the talk but that letter? Classic. You must frame it for her when she's an adult...

  19. if i remember correctly, the turkey rice aint that bad! i could see why the dog likes it!

  20. The Santa talk is a tough one. My daughter is 12 but before this age, the question always came up. I never gave a direct answer. Instead, I'd say, "Well, if there isn't a Santa, I wonder where all those great presents come from." She probably knew the truth long before she acknowledged it, but was afraid if she said Santa didn't exist, then those great presents wouldn't exist anymore either.
Oh! And I DO homeschool. ROFL.

  21. She made you sign a contract! THAT.IS.AWESOME.

  22. Your ARCs make a lovely pyramid! And your daughter's deed is too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  23. man, my dogs would love to eat at your house!! Mine get dry kibble ...and soup bones now and then. Boring!!

I love the contract too...my grandson Joey (he's 3) wanted to know this year if Santa was "really real" cuz he saw so many Santas when they were out at stores and "they all smelled different"!!!

  24. I'm not quite sure when my children stopped believing in Santa Claus. I think they kept up the illusion for my sake.......and the sake of getting all the goodies.....
We used to leave Santa BEER and cookies......did they guess the old man had something to do with Dad?

  25. I loved the Santa Claus note - that is the most adorable thing ever!!! And ... the turkey baby food for the cat - that is a little odd, but I can understand why the kitty might like it!

Thanks for coming by today - nice to see you. I'm having a weekend contest (my first) if you want to come by tomorrow. Take care and see you soon. Kellan

  26. Hi barrie, thanks for visiting my blog. It's kinda exciting to have a soon-to-be-published author leave a comment!

  27. I think writing that it's time for the Santa Talk sort of implies that the author already has some grim suspicions, don't you?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Okay, I haven't even had my coffee yet, and what I've read on your blog has already made me laugh out loud MANY times. Can't wait to read your book -- sounds so great. Thanks for finding my blog so I got a chance to find yours.

  32. oh that note just got me right in the gut.
I've got a few years still to go.
Let us know how "the talk" goes, so I can steal all your good ideas. :)

  33. That letter had me literally laughing out loud, sorry no advice, but I'm sure you will handle it perfectly.

  34. It's always nice to pair the Santa Claus talk with The Polar Express. Our whole family still believes.

And maybe you're too smart to home school.

    Enjoyed your blog. Thanks!
