Kansas City Barbeque in San Diego

Kansas City Barbeque on Market Street is the bar from the 1986 (seriously, has it been that long?) hit movie Top Gun.

It has actually been updated since this picture and has cute tables + umbrellas for eating outside. But, sorry, I couldn't find any unblurry photos.

Rumor has it that a Paramount Studios' location director was tootling around San Diego, looking for some places to film Top Gun. He stopped in at the divey bar, loved it, rented it for a few days. KCBB has been living off this little bit of serendipity (I have so been wanting to use that word in a post!) for over twenty years now.

I found mixed reviews about the quality of the barbeque at KCBB. But DH is an Okie, and he liked it. So, that says a little something.

If you're visiting San Diego, you'll most likely hit Seaport Village. Which means you'll be close to KCBB and you may as well check it out for a meal or a drink, tickle the ivories on the famous piano from the movie and gawk at the huge amount of college and professional sports memorabilia.

Here's the Kansas City Barbeque's website.

This post is part of the brilliant Travis Erwin's idea for Hometown Monday blogging.

  5. Thanks for this. It is always fun to find out that a movie scene had a real setting.

  6. KCBB, in San Diego. I'm sure there is a reason it's called Kansas City Barbeque?

I can't wait for my son to move back to San Diego (once he gets out of jail) so I can visit him!

  7. WOW! I like that California has other "city" foods too. Everything here in Michigan is supposed to be very "California" when you eat out.

What a cool bit of local history and... wait for it... flavor. :)

  16. That reminds me of Mystic Pizza here in Mystic, Connecticut. They have pictures all over the restaurant of it's namesake movie (pics of Julia Robert's big ol' '80s haircut and all). It is also right by the seaport village. It's got the best pizza in the whole state, I must say.

  19. Thanks for the tip Barrie. There used to be a Kansas City BBQ in Encinitas a couple of years back, but they closed. Don't know if it's the same owners - but my hubby really likes BBQ - will have to stop there sometime.

  20. Well, here in Merry Old England, I finally learned to make BBQ at home with a homemade Kansas City BBQ rub--don't tell my family back in Texas!

  21. ah yes...the good old days before tom cruise became 'crazy cruise'. :) i knew this guy in high school that could quote the movie word-for-word...even the technical plane talk! wild...and a bit sad. :)

  22. Cool! Despite our small size (pop. 2000,) movie producers seem to enjoy filming in our town, too. Thanks for sharing your town, again. Sorry it's taken me a while to post here, but mundania & back problems kept me down for a while.

  23. This is perhaps the least profound (at leat I hope) comment I've ever left, but it's all I can think of to say...
