odds and ends ( all good)

HUGE quadratic-formula-like congratulations to Child #3 who just finished GRADE 7. And who, a couple of weeks ago, took the high school district math test for entrance into HIGH SCHOOL HONORS GEOMETRY.

HE PASSED! So, next fall, he'll start his school day in 9th grade honors math, then return to middle school for the rest of his classes.

This is proof positive that dh's brilliant math genes totally dominated my very sorry math genes. Probably at the embryonic stage. Because all my children are better at math than their mother. Which leads me to believe that my math gene is BLANK!

Anyway, seeing your child succeed where you would've failed is...I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's an incredible, floaty feeling.

One of my sisters and her three girls are coming down this summer. My sister is fun and sensitive and interesting. Someone you want as a your BFF. And she'll be under my roof for close to two weeks. I CAN'T WAIT! I've already started stockpiling meals in my freezer so we'll have lots of time to play and still be able to feed our kids. Thank you Southwest for the great deals from Buffalo to San Diego.

Today I rewrote the first paragraph of I So Don't Do Makeup. (Waves to Editor Wendy who may or may not have been expecting this!) I read aloud the revamped paragraph to Child #2 who paused after I'd finished, then said, "Oh, that's good."

Yes, I raised his allowance.

Oh, and you know that the nanosecond I have a cover for Makeup, it's up here on the blog. The nanosecond.

So, you're all having a good summer so far, right?

  4. I have no idea what it would feel like to solve such an equation...probably good I would guess.

  5. Ha! No math gene. I think I suffer from the same oversight. My daughter went on to excel with calculus and trig, while I was stuck in summer school trying to sort out the basics of algebra and geometry. It's an alien language, and I consider myself invaded.
Have a lovely time with your sister.

  8. That's so exciting about your little math genius. It falls all over the spectrum with my kids. I think it's as much a matter of interest as anything though.

I can't wait to see your cover.

  9. Barrie - you are so fabulous even if you're not great at math - do math and writing genes ever co-exist? :) Congrats to your son and looks like you've got a fun summer planned with your sister.

  12. Having a sister that's your bff makes me green with envy - my brother tries - but he's still just a brother :(
I'm so grateful that my oldest got a sister - hey and both my girls somehow got the math gene - Can't wait for the nanosecond that your next cover arrives!
'am enjoying your blog as always!

  13. Barrie, congratulations to your son! My son just completed 8th grade while taking 9th grade honors math in the high school, along with 2 other 8th graders, and it was a very positive experience. It should also ease his transition into high school next year.

Have fun with your sister and other summer plans. How exciting about writing the first paragraph and getting good feedback – kids don’t lie about that stuff. I’m looking forward to reading #2.

Love that sunset photo below! And that chameleon – funny kids.

  14. Thanks for visiting my blog, I'm the new kid around here. I'm going to get a copy of "Don't do Mysteries" for my daughter. It looks like a really fun read.

  16. Congrats to your math whiz child! I expect he will be a whiz at logarithms too.

Your summer sounds like its going to be interesting for you and your family, and BUSY.

Tell me if I'm mistaken, but a few of those coins in the money jar look like Loonies.

Always good when your critique squad likes what you've written.

  17. Hi Barbara: It could be Loonies in the jar. Not my jar, though. It's a google image.

  18. Good for your son and for your book cover:)
I think having a trip to look forward to is one of the best things.

  19. perhaps Bitchy is your daughter then. She kicks butt in math, and it amazes me.

    seriously.

I am so excited about your sister's visit!!!

  20. I would much rather hit myself in the head with that jar of money than even LOOK at a freaking quadratic expression!! I HATE math!

But yea for your son! If I knew how to do it, I'd probably like it more! LOL

  21. I was really good at math... but retained none of it, proving I was just good at memorizing things, but not really interested.

I look at that equation and kind of got the first step (but wouldn't have thought of doing that) and don't really get the second step. le sigh. I'm getting old.

  22. Congrats to your son. Math can be so much fun, especially some of the more advanced math. (I'm a Math major). Great skills to have...and it's great that he'll have a hs class and get to know some of those kids even better before he starts high school the year after. Many, many wins for your smart kid!
