Why I didn't sleep last night

On Sunday, Child #3 got poked in the eye during a water polo game. Starting yesterday afternoon, his pupils were different sizes. The poked eye is noticeably more dilated. We have an ophthalmology appointment today. Not to mention, he also has swimmer's ear. Bilaterally. The kid is falling apart at the seams. Well, at least from the neck up.

There's an new crack in our driveway. From all the recent quakes? Does it make sense to live in an area rattled by earthquakes? With zero advance warning? People here will often say we're safe; it's not that big a deal; it's not worth worrying over. Then again, over 2,000 passengers boarded the Titanic, believing they were safe.

And I forgot to tell you that I guest blogged for Random House Canada on Today's Parent about how to get your teens to read over the summer. Here's the link: A Mother's Plea to Her Teens--Pick Up a Book

Insomnia sucks. But, hopefully, I'll be so tired by the time my head hits the pillow tonight that I'll sleep like a log. In the meantime . . . yawn.

  2. Oh, man, that's such a bummer for your son. Does that mean he won't be playing in the match later this month? Hope he feels better!

And yeah, you guys have been getting more than your share of quakes down there. Knocking on wood that they don't start moving up the coast...

  3. Sorry to hear about your insomnia and Child #3 and the earthquake jitters. I hope Child #3 is okay, especially the eye. If you don't live in an earthquake zone, there's tornado country, blizzard country, and hurricane country. I think every place on earth has its natural disasters. I guess you just have to balance the dangers with the rest of the quality of life.

  4. I'm sorry to hear about your kid's eye! That's not fun...

I've got a good friend that does reinsurance, basically she makes sure insurance companies have enough money to pay out...and, at least from damage to a single area, hurricanes are the worst. I'm not sure where earthquakes are, but I'd be surprised if tornadoes weren't behind hurricanes. As Teresa said...everywhere has natural disasters!

  9. Hope the eye's okay, the ear gets better, and you get some sleep. Don't worry about the driveway - if it's not an earthquake, then it'll be a meteor, or a tornado, or ... slow death by global warming.

Will check out your article - congrats!! I'm in awe.
